Colchester Zoo

Colchester Zoo
We're goin' to the zoo, zoo, zoo.
You can come too, too, too.
We're goin' to the zoo, zoo, zoo...

As a child I loved visiting the zoo. I have been to lots of zoo's in the UK and the world, but I only rate a few.

Colchester Zoo is one of the UK's finest zoo's, with over 270 species in 60 acres. It is a relaxed zoo with lots of animal exhibits, that offer a very hands on experience.

'Kingdom of the Wild' is one of the best exhibits in the zoo. It houses a number of African species including giraffes, maneless zebras, white rhinos and ostriches, all living together in the Zoo's very own Savannah.

Make sure you don't miss the daily feeding times of the animals. At Colchester you can get up close to loads of animals to help feed the elephants and giraffes. As a special birthday treat you can also pay for an experience to train and feed some of the animals.
Colchester Zoo
'Lion Rock' - I wouldn't like to come across this fella on a dark night. What do you recon my chances would be? I think he might add me to his foodie blog.
Colchester Zoo
'Suricate sands' - houses the Meerkats. Now for those of you who thought they only existed on TV, they are real animals. Whilst I didn't see Sergei the meerkat I did spot this little one, that reminded me of Oleg.
Meerkats

'Penguin shores' - houses the Humboldt Penguin's. Penguins always make me laugh they are such wonderful creatures.

Now whilst they are birds that cannot fly, they spend half their time on land and sea. They also can drink sea water which is pretty cool.

'Australian rainbows' opened in 2014 which is has a new tropical walk through. You can buy nectar which encourages the rainbow parrots to join you.

The zoo supports conservation in the wild, supporting a number of projects around the world to help protect endangered species

In 2013 the zoo celebrated its 50th birthday. It is a lovely zoo, with friendly and knowledgeable staff which I highly recommend.

  1. I've been to many zoos but Colchester has always been my favourite. We always used to save up our Tesco points and get Day Out vouchers to visit and then get up early and drive from Norwich.

It is the very best Zoo, I love how its landscaped, there's so much space and out of all the zoos I think it has the best enclosures for the animals.

I'm a little obsessed with giraffes so I love that you can feed them, that's always my favourite part of the day!

  2. Ha, you know me, if it's animals, I'm there. I've never visited a "zoo" in England, but have done the Taronga Zoo in Australia. I appreciate places that are more of an "animal refuge" than the traditional, horrible zoos we have here in America. And the "famous" circuses that travel here in the US - never go. And I don't patronize the zoos here either.

  4. I love going to the zoo as a child and I honestly wish I'd visit our local zoo more often now. It's awesome that the zoo has a feeding/training program, that sounds like a lot of fun! Love the last photo of the parrot eating out of your(?) hand, what an experience!

  6. I haven't been to a zoo for ages, it's sad that animals have to be in cages but it's necessary for conservation sometimes I guess. This isn't even that far from me, have to put it on my wishlist of places to go! x

  8. Oh my goodness! That monkey is beyond adorable. This zoo looks great but my absolute favourite zoo is the one in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico… you can actually buy little goodie bags full of food to hand feed all of the animals. I know, Mexico would be super far for you, but if you ever get the chance you need to check it out ;)

  12. The close interaction is a really interesting concept, a lot of zoos don't really go in for it. These are some lovely photographs :)
